COURSE DESCRIPTION
Technology for general surgery is constantly evolving. This course will provide an interactive and comprehensive experience focusing on management and treatment options from a general surgical perspective.
The goal of the Cleveland Clinic presents Updates in General Surgery is to provide an atmosphere to foster collaboration, innovation and sharing a cost-effective diagnostic approach for patients with complex general surgery cases involving hernia, colorectal, trauma and acute care surgery. Breast, cholecystectomy, biliary, oncological, endoscopy, and GI-related topics will also be discussed, along with a variety of topics affecting the rural/community surgeon.
We will cover what is new in enhanced recovery protocols and offer interactive sessions consisting of cases and questions and answers. American Board of Surgery (ABS) and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) self-assessment credits will be offered. Great refresher course for ABSITE training exam.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this educational activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Describe the indications and contraindications for managing various cases of ventral and inguinal hernia repairs.
- Discuss evidence-based and cost-effective diagnostic approach for patients with common benign and malignant colorectal cases.
- Integrate current evidence-based updates in the evaluation and management of common endocrine, breast, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal conditions encountered in general surgery practice.
- Apply appropriate surgical, referral, and multidisciplinary decision-making strategies for complex and emergent clinical scenarios relevant to the general surgeon.
- Assess evolving surgical techniques and preventive approaches to optimize patient outcomes in contemporary general surgery.
- Apply evidence-based approaches to the evaluation and management of complex general surgery scenarios, including incidental findings, perforated ulcers, immunotherapy-related surgical considerations, and difficult biliary disease.
- Integrate current guidelines, endoscopic options, and multidisciplinary strategies to enhance safety and outcomes in biliary and upper gastrointestinal surgery.
- Apply evidence-based principles to the evaluation and management of common and high-risk trauma and acute care surgical presentations, including frostbite, animal bites, obstetric trauma, small bowel obstruction, and penetrating neck injuries.
- Analyze patient- and injury-specific factors to guide operative decision-making in trauma care, including the use of damage control laparotomy and rib plating, based on current evidence and areas of clinical controversy.
