POCUS360: Integrating Ultrasound into Outpatient and Inpatient Care
May 7-9, 2026!
Why Attend?
The use of ultrasound to diagnose and guide procedures is growing rapidly and you don’t want to be left behind. This growth is primarily fueled by data indicating that ultrasound can improve the success rate of various procedures while decreasing complications. This course will provide you with current state-of-the-art techniques for diagnosis and guiding procedures in the outpatient and inpatient setting. The skills you learn by attending this course can easily be incorporated into your current practice.
Who Should Attend?
This activity is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, fellows, and residents in family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, gastroenterology, sports medicine, hospital medicine, critical care, cardiology, anesthesiology, pulmonology, urology, and radiology.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
Thursday – Outpatient Day – POCUS360: Waves in the Longitudinal Clinic
- Summarize the basic science and diagnostic use of ultrasound imaging
- Describe the basics of ultrasound to assess the thyroid, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder
- Describe the most effective diagnostic use of ultrasound to assess vascular abnormalities including aortic pathology and deep venous thrombosis
- Demonstrate competency for understanding the indications/contraindications, patient preparation and universal safety protocol, patient positioning, and needle placement for each of the ultrasound guided procedures listed below
- Describe the fundamental principles and necessary equipment for ultrasound guided joint injections, nerve blocks, and soft tissue aspirations
- Describe the fundamental principles and necessary equipment for ultrasound guided thoracentesis, paracentesis, and arthrocentesis
Friday – Inpatient Day – 360 Seconds: Hands-On POCUS Skills for Critically Ill Patients
- Summarize the basic science and diagnostic use of ultrasound imaging
- Review the role of ultrasound in a focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST) exam to assess for free fluid in the abdomen or around the heart
- Summarize the basics of using ultrasound to assess lungs
- Describe the protocols, evaluation, and best use of echocardiography in critically ill patients
- Describe the fundamental principles, indications, and necessary equipment for ultrasound guided peripheral and central venous access
- Demonstrate competency for needle placement for peripheral IV access and blood draws
- Recognize complications and discuss aftercare related to each of the ultrasound guided procedures listed above
- Practice the evaluation of shock and respiratory failure with integration of skills utilizing the Rapid Ultrasound for Shock and Hypotension (RUSH) exam in a simulated setting
Saturday - Hands-On Simulation Workshops
“RUSH” into your Practice: Assessing Critically Ill Patients in Shock
- Identify the hemodynamically compromised patient
- Describe the 3 components of the Rapid Ultrasound for Shock and Hypotension (RUSH) exam: Pump, Tank, Pipes
- Utilize the Rapid Ultrasound for Shock and Hypotension (RUSH) exam protocol in simulation cases
- Explain the ultrasound findings seen in the 4 types of distributive shock
POCUS360: Waves in the Longitudinal Clinic
- Describe how to perform and recognize common pathologies RUQ, renal, and abdominal ultrasound in the outpatient setting
- Perform paracentesis/thoracentesis and soft tissue/large joint aspiration, including describing patient preparation, indications/contraindications, and the universal safety protocol, needle placement, and recognize common complications of these ultrasound-guided procedures
