After completing this case the reader should be able to:

• Describe anemia in both kinetic and morphologic terms and apply this to the differential diagnosis of anemia.
• Recognize hemolysis and review the differential diagnosis of hemolytic disease.
• Describe the clinical, pathological, and laboratory manifestations of iron-deficient anemia and how it differs from anemia of chronic disease.
• Recognize anemia and concurrent thrombocytopenia and describe how they can be the initial findings of potentially life-threatening disorders that need prompt evaluation and treatment.
