Course Information

Course Description

Didactics and wet lab scenarios will include cannulation techniques, initiation of support, patient & circuit physiology, circuit trouble shooting and patient management. The learner will be immersed in ECLS terminology and concepts to complement the didactic course and enhance the learning process. In the simulation workshop, small groups will participate in various clinical scenarios reviewing emergency procedures. Simulation education will allow participants to develop skills in trouble shooting common ECLS problems and learn key assessments for decision making by experiential learning.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, Extra Corporeal Life Support (ECLS) providers will be able to recognize common indications and contraindications of ECLS therapy.

  • Describe the mechanics and functioning of the ECLS circuit ( oxygenator, cannulas, centrifugal pump, heat exchanger)
  • Demonstrate the correct assembly of an ECLS circuit
  • Describe the ECLS pathophysiology
  • Recognize common indications and contraindications of ECLS therapy
  • Demonstrate the correct assembly and trouble shooting of an ECLS circuit
  • Describe management strategies to remedy refractory hypoxemia on VV ECLS
  • Describe daily patient management on ECLS
  • Improve confidence in assessing ECLS physiology
  • Discuss our medical center’s experience regarding transport of the ECLS patient
  • Recognize complications and mortality associated with transport of the ECLS patient
  • Verbalize the roles of a multidisciplinary team, including Physical and Occupational Therapy, in regards to caring for the ECLS patient
  • Identify the precautions and sequences to consider when mobilizing patients on ECLS with various cannulation strategies

Who Should Attend

Cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, fellows, nurses, advanced practice nurses, perfusionists, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists will gain hands-on experience. The course will include expert reviews on the principles of ECLS and the applicable guidelines.
