Course Overview/Description

Virtual Learning:

  • Small group training sessions
  • Group application of the Academy/ASPEN adult malnutrition guidelines in a simulated virtual setting with trained actors and observers presenting case study scenarios
  • Comprehensive review of determining etiology to accurately diagnose malnutrition
  • Virtual simulated demonstration on completion of the nutrition focused physical exam
  • Review of fluid accumulation and how fluid impacts malnutrition diagnosis

Learning Objectives

After completing the virtual educational activity, the participant will be able to do the following:

  • Conduct an interview including medical/surgical history, diet history, and weight history to obtain evidence related to the etiology, presence, and degree of malnutrition.
  • Verbally instruct an educator on conducting a nutrition-focused physical examination to determine the loss of subcutaneous fat and/or muscle mass and the presence of possible micronutrient deficiencies and fluid accumulation.
  • Determine the etiology, presence, and degree of malnutrition using the Academy/ASPEN adult malnutrition guidelines.
  • Recognize the differences between acute and chronic inflammation as it relates to identifying malnutrition.
  • Apply practical tactics to help consistently identify an appropriate etiology as a framework for recognizing malnutrition.
