Cleveland Clinic CME - Monthly newsletter detailing upcoming Cleveland Clinic live CME events available

Dear Colleague,

Cleveland Clinic CME - Celebrating 75 years of Excellence in Continuing Medical Education

The role of industry in in funding CME activities, although firmly established, is increasingly controversial.

In a recently published article in Academic Medicine (January 2010), Cleveland Clinic authors analyzed information from the CME activity database (346 CME activities; 95,429 participants in 2007) to obtain evidence of whether industry support of CME affects perceptions of commercial bias in the presentations.

No published studies have addressed the relationship between commercial support and perceived bias in accredited CME activities.

The data support the supposition that a CME provider with established procedural guidelines that comply with ACCME Standards for Commercial Support can ensure that commercial funding does not affect the perception of commercial bias in an activity. Across a wide range of types of CME activities, no difference in commercial bias was found between those programs with and without industry support.
