Description

As a surgical innovation, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery has been shown to improve outcomes compared with outcomes from traditional laparoscopy surgery. However, these surgeries require substantial technical skills, creating a need for educational activities focused on this topic.

To fill this need, we have developed an educational activity focused on these types of minimally invasive surgery using natural orifices and single-site incisions:

  • Single-Port Laparoscopy;
  • Single-Port Robotic Applications;
  • Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES®).

This multi-disciplinary learning activity is designed for physicians and surgeons from various specialties interested in becoming skilled with the procedural techniques and understanding the challenges and benefits of these surgeries. Plenary sessions and live surgery demonstrations will be held in the morning with non-CME hands-on workshops in the afternoon.

Event Modules include:
1. Single-Port Laparoscopy: Ports and Access Techniques
2. Getting Started in LESS
3. Single-Port Laparoscopy: Live Surgery
4. Single-Port Laparoscopy in General Surgery
5. Single-Port in Gynecology
6. Single-Port in Urology
7. Single-Port in Colorectal

8. Concurrent Sessions
9. NOTES
10. Instruments and Endoscopes
11. Access and Exit Techniques
12. Wrap-Up with the Experts
13. Hands-On Animal Laboratory

Objectives

Through this educational offering, the Cleveland Clinic strives to produce significant knowledge gains in healthcare practitioners regarding single-port laparoscopy, robotics, and NOTES, knowledge that will, in turn, improve the quality of care for their patients.

After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to do the following

  • Identify the anatomical basis for Single-Port Laparoscopy, Robotics, and NOTES;
  • Define the standardized terminology for these techniques;
  • Explain the potential benefits and limitations of Single-Port Laparoscopy, Robotics, and NOTES;
  • Describe instruments and optics and explain their implications and use for these technologies;
  • Demonstrate competence in use of instrumentation and techniques on animal models;
  • Discuss the importance of patient selection criteria and their impact on clinical outcomes.
