2010 Heart-Brain Summit
September 23-24, 2010
Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health
Las Vegas, Nevada
Description
The Heart-Brain connection is now a topic of great interest to researchers from multiple disciplines. We now have scientific evidence from more than 100 studies showing stress and depression are prevalent in populations with cardiovascular disease, are predictive of developing cardiovascular disease and are predictive of adverse outcomes among patients with existing cardiac disease.
Understanding the relationship between depression and heart disease is critical. Furthering our understanding of this physiology could lead to a better understanding of many other chronic diseases and the development of novel therapies resulting in improved patient outcomes. Several lines of evidence suggest that in depth investigation in the area of heart-brain medicine will yield significant results.
The purpose of this Summit is to obtain insights from key opinion leaders to increase our understanding of these heart-brain interactions and hear updates in the field. Health care professionals will learn of recent discoveries that relate to new treatments for cardiovascular and nervous system disorders and assess their implications for clinical practice.
Target Audience
The 2009 Heart-Brain conference in Chicago, IL had 170 attendees representing 21 states and 3 countries in the following fields:
- Cardiology
- Neurology
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Basic and Clinical Research
- Nursing
- Biomedical Engineering
Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Describe the link between depression and coronary artery disease and recognize the adverse outcomes associated with this relationship
- Debate the need for clinical trials to study the relationship between depression and heart disease
- Cite the recent literature and current research in heart-brain interactions and discuss potential implications for clinical practice
- Describe depression and inflammatory signaling in Alzheimer’s disease
- Discuss the state of research and innovation in heart-brain medicine
- Implement heart-brain medicine practices with biofeedback and device-based therapies
- Discuss new insights into how parasympathetic activation affects disease progression and clinical outcomes

Figures, graphs and simple tables are allowed.
Use of standard abbreviations is desirable; place unusual abbreviations in parentheses after first use of the full term. If your abstract is accepted, the presenter will be required to complete a Financial Relationship Disclosure Form per the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support and CCF’s CME Policy 05-01. Your acceptance notice will indicate your poster assignment number. Each poster board measures 4’ high (121cm) and 6’ wide (138cm); you must provide a copy of the abstract, typed in large type for posting on the board. Illustrations must be readable from distances of at least three feet. Use lightweight poster board only; heavy board is difficult to secure. Push pins will be available on-site. Heart-Brain Summit Awards
Young Investigator Award
The Young Investigator Award competition is open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, fellows and junior faculty within two years of their first appointment. Only original work, not previously presented elsewhere will be considered.
Please note your eligibility on your abstract submission. The four finalists will be required to complete the Financial Relationship Disclosure per the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support and CCF’s Policy 05-0. Finalists will be invited to present their submission during a moderated session at the summit.
Pioneer Award and Lecture
The Pioneer Award is given in recognition of contributions fundamental to the development of heart-brain medicine. The award recognizes senior healthcare professionals who have had a major impact on the understanding of heart-brain pathophysiology, the consequences of heart-brain interactions for the health of humankind, and the innovative treatment of heart-brain disorders.
