Overview
The Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Course/Turnbull Symposium is a 4-day educational activity composed of a 2-day Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
Course and a 2-day Turnbull Symposium presented by the Cleveland Clinic Department of Colorectal Surgery, Digestive Disease Institute.
These activities are designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals who care for patients needing surgical treatment of diseases of the small
and large intestines. This symposium has several novel features, including a hands-on cadaver workshop with expert instruction on laparoscopic colorectal
surgery techniques. Didactic sessions primarily focus on surgical management techniques although diagnosis and perioperative care are also included.
Key topics include anorectal diseases, benign disorders of the rectum, and surgical procedures for ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and rectal cancer.
This year’s Turnbull Symposium will be a special event; the occasion for honoring Victor W. Fazio, MD, and his 32 years as Chairman of the Department
of Colorectal Surgery. During the past 32 years, Dr. Fazio has shaped the lives and careers of generations of colorectal surgeons, and the Turnbull
Symposium will pay particular attention to these alumni. This will be an opportunity to meet old friends and colleagues.
In addition there will be several new features and highlights in the program:
- Registrant’s Choice: One session will be reserved for speakers and topics chosen by registrants. A list of Cleveland Clinic Faculty and their
topics will be sent to each registrant via email survey.
- Adventures with Alumni: Two sessions of “Colorectal Jeopardy” featuring alumni teams attempting to answer a series of questions based on
challenging cases.
- Fazio’s Favorites: Four 30-minute lectures by the two guest speakers on topics close to
Dr. Fazio’s heart.
- Research Forum: An opportunity to get up early in the morning and hear about the groundbreaking research being conducted by the Digestive Disease
Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.
- History of the Department of Colorectal Surgery: An informative lecture by the Department’s historian, Dr. Jim Wu.
- The Turnbull Oration: Given by Dr. Victor Fazio himself.
By providing clinicians with relevant discussions of the most current evidence and hands-on instruction, this educational offering strives to help
physicians acquire knowledge of new data and surgical techniques. This knowledge can then be translated directly to their clinical practice, which will
ultimately improve patient outcomes.
The academic theme of the Symposium will be surgical technique and the difference it makes in surgical outcomes.
The Symposium black tie dinner will be a
gala event with a special tribute to Dr. Victor W. Fazio.
